100 Hours Beneath the Chesapeake

A look back at Gilbert Klingle's ground-breaking underwater exploration in Mathews County.

Step back in time at the Mathews Museum and explore the remarkable story of local naturalist and innovator Gilbert Klingle.

Building a 3,000-pound steel and glass underwater diving chamber known as the Aquascope right off Gwynn's Island, Klingle created a unique window into the depths of the Chesapeake Bay. His daring underwater exploration captured the attention of National Geographic and revealed the hidden marine life beneath the surface.

Visit the Mathews Museum to view artifacts and exhibits honoring Gilbert Klingle’s contribution to Chesapeake Bay history and marine research.
